Ujyalo Foundation: Weaving Identities

This story product is from CEC awardee Ujyalo Foundation. The Foundation is a Denver-based nonprofit organization that has been working since 2014 to uplift the stories and lived narratives of South Asian women, girls and non-binaries.

As a part of the Weaving Identities initiative, a storytelling project was launched where narratives of 40 women, girls, and non-binaries mainly from Southeast Asia will be shared. The main goal of the storytelling project is to document the challenges, achievements, and contributions of members of our communities so that their narratives are archived for us and generations to come after. This also will help us have a meaningful representation of our communities where numbers and data cannot explain the lived experiences of our communities.

“Our communities are often under-resourced and underfunded, and heavily lack the data that represents us in a holistic manner. Storytelling is a powerful medium to capture the lived experiences of our communities that often is not represented.” says Amuda Mishra, the Founder of Weaving Identities and Ujyalo Foundation.
