This story product comes from Colorado Equity Compass (CEC) awardee Denver Food Rescue (DFR). DFR works to fight food insecurity and provide access to fresh and healthy food to the community it serves. Over the past 6 months, the organization collected the unique stories of the families facing barriers and gaps in food access that highlight how food is part of everyone’s story and family connection. Here are a few words from DFR describing this story: “Here is a look at how transportation barriers, one of the social determinants of health, impacts Victorie. Victorie, is one of DFR’s Healthy Choice Food Box Program participants. She speaks while she makes a delicious home recipe: pinto bean and rice burritos. Transportation barriers impact how and what resources individuals can access. We also talk about the changing neighborhood context, through gentrification, and how it impacts the ability to feel comfortable and secure.” Authors: Rebecca Luna, Nicole Tabor, and Ashley McPhee
