While it's taken months of work, efforts haven't stopped in the fight to restore the Leon Young Pavilion. The 42-year-old monument commemorates the city's first and only Black mayor and vice mayor. It fell into disrepair and faced threats of being torn down, much to the distress of community members.
“Parks and Rec is trying to tear it down, and we’re trying to save the history of the Leon Young Pavilion,” said the Rev. Paul Nelson, pastor of The Living Word Baptist Church in a Gazette article. “When you start tearing down history, that’s not nice.”
City leaders have agreed to work with concerned citizens, and multiple rallies have been held to honor the memory of Young. Read more to learn about the pavilion's history and efforts to renovate the space.
