Community presentations will train Colorado residents on how to access equity data and twenty storytelling awards will be given to community organizations or resident-led groups for data storytelling.

Denver, October 5, 2021 — Since the Colorado Equity Compass (CEC) launched in March, the data storytelling platform has supported Coloradans to learn about social determinants of health affecting their communities, down to the census tract or neighborhood level.

The CEC data model measures health outcomes by specifically looking at a person's life expectancy and self-reported health status. The health impacts on these factors, often referred to as social determinants of health (SDOH), are taken into account by this model as well and can be accessed by county. Additionally, it features an extensive resources page that hosts a curated selection of tools, articles, health equity terms, and more that allows Coloradans to gain an in-depth understanding of health inequities present around the state. Presentations provided by CEC will explore how these tools can be used by community members to make change in their communities.

“In this next phase, we will be walking through how to use the data storytelling platform, adding a function that would allow communities to upload and share their own data, and creating steps for how to take action with the information,” says CEC Project Manager Annie Guo VanDan.

Awards

CEC is also excited to announce that it will be awarding twenty $2,000 awards to organizations and resident-led groups across the state.

The awards will fund existing or future programs and projects that share the stories of Colorado residents working to fight inequities related to the social determinants of health (SDOH). The purpose of these awards is to support community organizations to gather and present stories to share the unique experiences of the people they serve. The goal of these awards is to use data storytelling to effectively connect real stories of community members with health equity data.

Applications are due November 1, 2021. Learn more about the awards and see the application.
